What To Know About Armadillos in Kansas
After hearing about a Dunlap resident who encountered a 24-inch armadillo and another sighting of one in a yard on Belfry Hill in Council Grove, I decided to explore the growing presence of armadillos in Kansas. My search for information led me to the Kansas State Extension office, but I found little information other than a suggestion to “Google Armadillos in Kansas.” So, here’s what I discovered about these fascinating creatures. In North America, there is only one native species of armadillo— the nine-banded long-nosed armadillo. Known for its digging and scent-marking behavior, these animals can cause damage to gardens and landscaping as they search for food, such as grubs, earthworms, and insects.
