The Morris County Commissioner meeting was called to order on Tuesday, September 24, 2024, at 9 a.m. Commissioners David Fox, Jim Barber and Wayne Kohler were present. Bill Kassebaum, County Counselor, and Chelsey Schmidt, County Clerk, were present.
Mark your calendars for Sethfest, which is Saturday, October 12. The event is named in honor of local historical celebrity Seth Hayes. The event is moving away from the Riverwalk Amphitheatre to Main Street’s downtown. October 12 will be filled with activities celebrating history, the arts, and community. For this year’s event, the Community Arts Council of Council Grove has partnered with downtown businesses to create a phenomenal schedule. Activities are free and open to the public.
Memorial Health System (MHS) has announced that Dr. Maci Hicks has arrived at Herington’s Heartland Care Clinic. “It has been an enjoyable experience to follow Maci through her schooling and visit with her through the years”, said Harold Courtois, MHS CEO. “She has been able to build some great relationships with staff before her arrival, which is pretty great; she’ll feel right at home on day one!”
For 30 years, the Council Grove Community Center, also more commonly known as the Bowers Community Center, has been struggling to find funding to restore the glorious old building. It has gone through some silent years and some dark years. It is on the National Registry of Historic Places. After the initial attempts to save the historic building at 325 W Main were made and the lower level was finished as public restrooms for travelers and Council Grove guests in the 1990s, fundraising stalled and the committee grew weary or passed on. The original goal of a community arts center dimmed as other venues came into existence in the area. A new, viable purpose for the building was needed.
