Digging For Old Bottles In Council Grove

Editors Note: Recently, I received a phone call from my friend Dave Cosgrove. He had been “Googling” and ran across an article about Council Grove that he wasn’t aware of. Since he is the long time president of the Morris County Historical Society, that caught my attention. It was the story about a couple of guys that came to Council Grove in search of valuable bottles that had been left behind in privies by travelers of old. The article was originally printed in the May - June 2019, Bottles and Extras magazine, published by the Federation of Historical Bottle Collectors (FOHBC). The author has since passed. The name of the magazine was changed to Antique Bottle and Glass Collector (AB&GC) in 2022.

Chase County College Access Awards Over $13,000 Of Scholarships

Chase County College Access, a local scholarship fund providing financial support to Chase County high school students pursuing concurrent college credits, awarded $13,350 in scholarships during the 2023 calendar year, a 9% increase over 2022. A total of 31 students received college credits during the 2022/2023 school year at Butler Community College and Flint Hills Technical College, setting a record for program participation! Also encouraging is that 90% percent of the 2023 graduating seniors planned to continue their education at a post-secondary institution, a return to pre-COVID levels! This is well above the State of Kansas average of 54% Concurrent programming is expected to get attention from the Kansas Legislature next year as they consider the “Diploma Plus” program being recommended by the Kansas Board of Regents, which would use state funds to cover some tuition costs. According to Michael Brown, Chase County College Access Board Chair, “Diploma Plus would cover tuition costs of three concurrent courses for every high school student. These courses are currently covered by our program, so funding from the State of Kansas would allow us to stretch our funding further as we support Chase County students.”
