A community open house will be held Thursday, December 18, to honor the retirement of Dr. Melanie S. Byram, a board-certified family medicine physician with more than 35 years of service in primary care. The celebration will take place from 4 to 6 p.m. at the MCH Medical Clinic, located at 604 N. Washington.
Jane Caby, the Council Grove CBC Blood Drive Coordinator, has released the names of donors in Monday’s blood drive.
The 2025 Herington Pre-Season Basketball Tournament opened Tuesday, December 9, bringing together boys’ and girls’ teams from across the region for four days of early-season competition. Games are being played in both the Herington High School gym and the Herington Elementary School gym, with varsity and junior varsity action scheduled throughout the week.
Information from Kathryn Black Pearson (b. May 31, 1914 – d. Sept 12, 2013), shared with Helen Judd March 12, 1999, and shared by Kelley Judd Kathryn Black won her first golf tournament, the Emporia City Championship, at age thirteen. Her father had joined the Emporia Country Club so she could play on grass greens. She began playing golf after a bout of infantile paralysis, when her doctor advised exercise, massage, and walking as much as possible. Her inventive father fashioned a crude club by attaching a block of wood to a stick, allowing her to join her parents on the Council Grove Golf Course, which had sand greens.
