Kelly Hickman, of Council Grove, emerged as the winner of Week 15 of the Council Grove Republican Pigskin Pick ’Em football contest after correctly selecting 12 of the 16 games. Hickman tied for first place on total correct picks but secured the weekly championship by coming closest on the tiebreaker.
Governor Laura Kelly has signed an updated drought proclamation that places Morris, Dickinson, and Wabaunsee counties under a Drought Watch, reflecting improving conditions statewide but continued concern in parts of northeast Kansas. Chase County is not included in the current drought declaration.
As Kansas officials continue to monitor drought conditions, residents have a way to share what they are seeing on the ground through the Condition Monitoring Observer Reports (CMOR) system. CMOR is a nationwide reporting tool used to collect local observations related to drought, water supply, agriculture, wildfire risk, and flooding.
Council Grove now occupies a central position in the future of the Flint Hills Trail State Park, both geographically and strategically, according to Jeff Bender, Region Supervisor with the Kansas Department of Wildlife, Parks and Tourism, who spoke in Council Grove at the annual meeting of the Heart of the Flint Hills Chapter of the Santa Fe Trail Association. Bender outlined recent construction milestones, trail usage data, and the status of federal funding needed to complete the final western segment of the trail.
Elmer Yoder will spend his winter break learning his lines for the role of Billy Ray Junior in the Council Grove Community Theatre production of On Golden Pond by Ernest Thompson.
