Summer-Long Fishing Contest offers fun, prizes, and adventure for youth

From May 1 through August 15, 2025, youth across Kansas are invited to cast a line and join the fun in the 5th Annual Summer-Long Family Fishing Contest, hosted in memory of Walter “Dutch” Honer. Organized by Phil Taunton, host of “What’s in Outdoors,” and a team of generous sponsors, the contest encourages young anglers to enjoy the outdoors while vying for exciting prizes and recognition.

During a May 2 visit to the Council Grove Marina, U.S. Senator Jerry Moran addressed community members concerned about the ongoing federal hiring freeze and its impact on the staffing of Council Grove Lake, a key economic and recreational resource in Morris County. The Senator confirmed that the hiring exemption needed to restore staffing at the lake must come from the U.S. Department of Defense, not directly from the Army Corps of Engineers.
