Council Grove High School Head Basketball Coach Bruce Hula has been named as a finalist for the Kansas 3A Coach of the Year. Hula’s Braves finished the season at 14 - 9 and were Substate Runner-ups. The team also won the Flint Hills League Championship with a 6 - 1 record.

We first became aware of a problem, without knowing who was behind it, a year ago when we featured a local business. After the article was published, they started receiving congratulatory phone calls and sales pitches for plaques containing the article. They thought the salesperson was associated with the Council Grove Republican, which was not the case. Luckily, they called the Council Grove Republican and learned that we do not operate in such a manner. If anyone locally wants such a plaque, when asked, we will be glad to direct them to a local company. Council Grove High School baseball starts their 2025 season off with a very experienced team and will try to continue the winning ways the boys have experienced so far this school year. The boys have their home opener at 4 p.m. today vs their old rival, Herington.
Hannelore LaRue, a student at Council Grove Junior High School, represented Morris County at the 2025 Sunflower State Spelling Bee held at Kansas Wesleyan University in Salina. Competing against 90 other top spellers from across the state, LaRue advanced to the second round, earning a 7th-place finish.
