Happy 162nd Birthday -- Celebrating Kansas Day!

The State of Kansas will be 162 years old on Sunday, January 29, a day that Kansans celebrate as Kansas Day. It is the day that Kansas entered the union as the 34th state. Kansas entered the union on January 29, 1861 as a free state, 2 ½ months before the beginning of the Civil War. Students at Paola public schools have been credited as being the ones who first recognized January 29 as a holiday in 1877. The state holiday and the celebrations that go with it, all started because a classroom of kids was eager to learn about their country’s history.
