CONSTITUTION WEEK -- Mayor Debi Schwerdtfeger is pictured here as she signs a proclamation designating September 17-23 as Constitution Week in Council Grove. This special week gives Americans the opportunity to celebrate and acknowledge the nation’s constitution and the freedoms it provides. September 17 marks the 240th anniversary of the drafting of the Constitution of the United States of America. In the 1950s, the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) presented their resolution regarding Constitution Week to the U.S. Congress, passing both the House and Senate before being signed into law by President Dwight Eisenhower on August 2, 1956. Next week’s issues of the Council Grove Republican will feature daily Constitution Week features and insight into the importance of the document from local elected officials.
An auspicious start to 1960 greeted backers of the Council Grove reservoir project, with President Eisenhower reversing his policy of the previous two years and asking Congress to authorize funds for a number of water projects. Included among the projects were the long sought funds for the Council Grove and John Redmond reservoirs, which had been authorized a decade earlier in the Flood Control Act of 1950 but had yet to receive a substantial funding push from Washington. The two projects were recommended for $2 million and $3.8 million respectively. Overall, Eisenhower recommended the funding of 49 Corps of Engineers projects and funding of approximately $120 million more than Congress had earmarked for the projects the previous year.
The Council Grove Braves Cross Country team hit the course on Thursday for the Karr Classic hosted by Northern Heights, with the varsity boys team coming away with a first place finish and Kodi Downes finishing in the top spot for the third consecutive week.
