There are plenty of ways to help veterans, active-duty military members, and their families. Here are 10 ways you can help, from sending a care package to driving veterans to their medical appointments.
ESSAY CONTEST WINNERS -- Sixth grade students at Council Grove Elementary School recently participated in a local veterans essay contest, with the Royce Benjamin Veterans Awarded presented to the top two contestants in each of the three sixth grade classes. Each student received a certificate and a monetary award. Anna Bachura, daughter of Chris and Sandy Bachura and Lilly Wirtz, daughter of Matt and Janelle Wirtz were the top two finishers in Ms. Winegar’s homeroom. Top two finishers in Mr. Gant’s homeroom were Logan Stockwell, son of Ty and Janae Stockwell and Desiree Bachura, daughter of Joshua and Amanda Bachura. Macey Hensley, daughter of Matt and Nichole Hensley and Haylee Nielsen, daughter of Damon and Amy Nielsen were the top finishers in Mrs. Booker’s homeroom. The contest is sponsored by the family of Royce Benjamin, United States Navy retired, in honor of his memory. The winners will read their essays at today’s Veterans Day program at CGES. No pandemic slowed down the activities at Bushong during the last 18 months. People associated with the North Lyon County Veterans Memorial Project, Inc. continued to work in transforming over-grown lots, which were once the center of downtown Bushong. At the entrance to 3rd Street, the orange and black sign announces the Veterans Park, and this week a similar sign went up along Highway 56.
