Adjacent Landowner To Downing Cemetery Responds
Local landowner and former resident Harv Haeker contacted the Council Grove Republican on Friday about the Downing Cemetery article we ran from an old 1895 Republican article. I had commented that the cemetery was inaccessible to the public without permission, as multiple people with historical knowledge have told me that the cemetery is public but access to it is not, without landowner permission.
Braves Baseball Splits With Central Heights
In the first baseball game against Central Heights Thursday, Ace Monihen collected three hits in three at bats, as the Council Grove Braves defeated the Central Heights Vikings 10-0. The Braves got on the board in the first inning after Monihen doubled, scoring two runs.
Downing Cemetery Still Exists, 129 Years After Public Access Halted
Downing Cemetery, near Kelso, is inaccessible to the public without permission. Kelso is 6 miles northwest of Council Grove as the crow flies, and Downing Cemetery is less than a mile west of the Kelso Cemetery. On June 5, 1893, Siloma Downing deed the cemetery to Morris County.
