One of Council Groves finest... Kathryn Black Pearson

Information from Kathryn Black Pearson (b. May 31, 1914 – d. Sept 12, 2013), shared with Helen Judd March 12, 1999, and shared by Kelley Judd Kathryn Black won her first golf tournament, the Emporia City Championship, at age thirteen. Her father had joined the Emporia Country Club so she could play on grass greens. She began playing golf after a bout of infantile paralysis, when her doctor advised exercise, massage, and walking as much as possible. Her inventive father fashioned a crude club by attaching a block of wood to a stick, allowing her to join her parents on the Council Grove Golf Course, which had sand greens.

Symphony in the Flint Hills awards final gifts to four Flint Hills nonprofits

Symphony in the Flint Hills, the organization that for 20 years brought statewide attention to the Flint Hills Tallgrass Prairie through concerts, education, and community programming, has formally concluded its operations by awarding its remaining funds to four nonprofits carrying forward similar work. Board members personally visited each recipient to deliver the final gifts.

Council Grove City Council addresses residency rules, library repairs of $8,679

The Council Grove City Council met Tuesday evening, Dec. 2, 2025, with all councilors present except Third Ward representative Sean Honer. The meeting opened with the approval of the consent agenda, which included minutes from the previous meeting, appropriations totaling $38,214.83, a renewal application for cereal malt beverage sales at Dollar General, and a renewal application for on/off-premise cereal malt beverage sales at Saddlerock Café. There were no lake house transfers.
