The Morris County Commissioner meeting was called to order on Tuesday, October 28th, 2025, at 9:00 a.m. Commissioners David Fox, Jim Barber, and Wayne Kohler were present. Bill Kassebaum, County Counselor, and Chelsey Schmidt, County Clerk, were present.
At Council Grove Elementary School, discussions surrounding the proposed USD 417 bond issue are not abstract budget lines—they are visible in the daily realities of crowded classrooms, unsecured playgrounds, and students trekking between multiple buildings in all kinds of Kansas weather. During an October building tour, Principal Kelcy Bremer, Vice Principal Tasha Green, and Superintendent Tyson Eslinger guided me through the facility to explain how the bond could bring long-needed improvements in safety, functionality, and early childhood education.
Flint Hills Technical College, Emporia, has announced a $10,000 pledge from Joey LeMay, Director of Operations Optimization for Simmons Pet Foods, and his wife Amy toward the college’s Advancing Tomorrow capital campaign. The gift represents a personal investment in the institution that launched Joey’s successful career in the manufacturing industry.
The Eye Doctors Optometrists have announced that their Council Grove office at 313 W. Main Street is permanently closed, with its last day of operation being Tuesday, November 4, 2025. In a letter sent to patients this week, the organization expressed appreciation for the trust and support of the Council Grove community over the years. Patients are being directed to the company’s two Emporia locations for continued care—at 2504 W. 15th Street and 512 Commercial Street. Dr. Michelle Morrison will also be seeing patients every other Wednesday at the downtown Emporia office.
