TOPEKA -- The 8th Judicial District Nominating Commission has selected Laura Viar to fill a magistrate judge vacancy in Morris County. Viar’s new position will be effective on her swearing-in. She currently is county attorney for Morris County. She fills a vacancy created when Judge Margaret White retires January 1.

New head coach Brogan Humphrey will unveil the current version of the Council Grove High School wrestling team Tuesday night at the annual Blue/Gold wrestling scrimmage in Braves Gym. The 2022-23 squad will be divided in two, and inter-squad matches will be contested. Twenty-seven grapplers are on the roster this year. CGHS fields both boys’ and girls’ teams, and the Braves’ numbers include several wrestlers from Northern Heights, who wrestle with Council Groves under a cooperative agreement.
John Steinkuehler, of Council Grove, won week 11 of the Council Grove Republican’s Pigskin Pick ‘em Football Contest, correctly guessing 14 out of 17 contests. Steinkuehler fended off two competitors to win the tiebreaker, guessing 68 total points when the total points for the Texas and Kansas game were 69.
Bill Wilson, Strong City, is the Kansas Department of Transportation Supervisor who nominated the Council Grove Sub Area KDOT crew, consisting of many Council Grove residents, for the KDOT internal “Examples of Excellence” award. The photo was released on social media by KDOT North Central Kansas the day before KS177 opened, causing many to erroneously think that the crew worked on KS177 when instead they work throughout District 2. There are 6 districts in Kansas.
