The Council Grove City Council approved a Police and Fire Committee Recommendation for the purchase of new fire equipment on Tuesday. Spending for the equipment, to be provided by Casco Industries, was in the amount of $19,703.10. Deputy Chief Brian Brown said that the purchase would help the fire department begin bringing equipment up to date and that another similar purchase next year would bring all the equipment up to current standards. The new equipment is expected to last for seven years and the old gear will be maintained as reserve gear. City Administrator Nick Jones added that he and Brown had also completed an inventory of all of the fire gear and internal inspections of equipment were up to date. The new equipment includes helmets, boots and jackets.

Matt and Chanell Ross have announced that they are the new owners of H&R Block in Council Grove, taking over ownership from Larry and Karen Landgren on January 1, 2022. The Landgren’s, who have owned the H&R Block franchise for 42 years, will be semi-retiring and will continue to work in the office taking care of their longtime clients.

READ ALOUD -- Council Grove High School Key Club Member Ella Kirk reads to a group of Council Grove Elementary School second graders last week. Kirk was joined by club members Jessica Filkin, Alison Bachura, Shanyn Miller and Casaiia Mullen. The goal of Key Club is to help students become leaders and active members of their communities through service and volunteerism. One of the club’s goals is to promote literacy and the importance of reading.
