ROTARY SPEAKER -- Jeff Bender, Parks Regional Supervisor, for the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks, was the guest speaker at Rotary on Wednesday. He provided much information about the status of Flint Hills Trail segments that will stretch from Osawatomie to Herington. A detailed article will follow in a few days.

(Washington Post) After nearly a week of intense criticism and national headlines, the local prosecutor behind a controversial police raid on a Kansas newspaper office has agreed to withdraw the search warrant and return items taken from the paper.

As the area’s county fairs came and went, the staff at the Council Grove Republican discussed how 4-H categories had changed over the years. At this year’s Morris County Fair, there were entries for Buymanship but none for Construction (sewing). At the Chase County Fair, the findings were similar, however there were four entries there for Construction, all in the 7-14 age group. We talked about how long it had been since any of us had constructed an outfit and the buzz on social media when someone was looking for a person to do alterations. It seemed the person that was nearly always mentioned, and many times the only person mentioned, was Susan Osborne of Council Grove. I decided she would be a perfect candidate for our Flint Hills Crafter feature.
