This week’s student of the week at Council Grove Elementary School is Samantha McDonald. She is ten-years-old and a student in April Winegar’s fifth grade class. Samantha’s interests include basketball and dance. She is active in Gods Kids and says her favorite non-school thing to do is sleep in. Samantha says she has a dog and a weird brother.

CEOs Say Medicare Advantage Plans Threaten Rural Hospitals and Patients

There has been much discussion lately about the challenges of sustaining quality health care in rural communities. The Council Grove Republican was alerted to an article written and researched by Gretchen Morgenson that appeared on the NBC News website yesterday, October 31, 2023. Some 31 million Americans have Medicare Advantage plans, private-sector alternatives to Medicare introduced in 2003 by Congress to encourage greater efficiency in health care. Just over half of Americans on Medicare are enrolled in one of the plans offered by large insurance companies, including United-Healthcare and Humana.
