Mixed messages from City Hall

On Friday morning, I learned from a city employee and multiple other sources that Council Grove Police Chief Shawn Wangerin had resigned. I reached out to Wangerin via personal message seeking comment for the Council Grove Republican, and he responded, “I’m not going anywhere.”

Just 10 miles southeast of Council Grove sits the small community of Dunlap, a place many area residents have passed through without a second thought. Today, it is home to only a few dozen people. But in the late 1800s, Dunlap was something much more, a thriving settlement built by African Americans who came to Kansas seeking a better life.
