INITIATE FRESHMEN Parade and Bon Fire to Climax Event Tonight (as typed in the Council Grove Republican on September 24, 1947) The routine at the Council Grove high school was anything but normal today as upperclassmen put freshmen through the paces to initiate them as full-fledged members of the student body.

Freshmen girls were required to wear gunny sack skirts and blouses with men’s ties, make-up on one side of their faces only, and men’s work shoes. They also had to set one side of their hair and leave the other straight.

Attire for the boys consisted of girls’ shorts and halters (or sweater), silk hose (with garters showing), make-up, and one high heeled and one low-heeled shoe.

For an assembly program all were requested, rather emphatically, however, to bring an onion and to memorize four lines of poetry. The event will be concluded tonight with a bonfire at the stadium and a parade, led by the band, on Main street, and the first-year students will arm themselves with brooms to sweep the streets
