“On Kaw Butte” Brings Council Grove’s Past to Life Through Fictional Lens

When author Jim Knoch first rolled into Council Grove, Kansas, it wasn’t with the intention of writing a novel, and certainly not of embedding the town so deeply into one. His first visit nearly 40 years ago was an accident. Traveling the Midwest for his antique business and taking a detour from the usual I-70 route, Knoch happened into town just as the Washunga Days parade was ending. Caught at the tail end of what he described his “beat-up old Chevy van” with a few of his children in tow, he found himself as the first one in line to continue through town behind the parade.
