Council Grove will soon welcome a unique event that brings history to life. The Santa Fe Trail Wagon Show will take place Friday and Saturday, September 19–20, at Council Oak Park, 200 East Main St. The show is free to the public and promises an educational and entertaining experience for all ages.
It’s hard to imagine that the disaster at the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001 could have been any worse. And yet for one simple fact—the time of day—it would have been far more deadly.
George Champlin Sibley’s name is not commonly heard in Council Grove today, yet his work in 1825 defined the community’s very existence. The Santa Fe Trail survey, led by Sibley, determined the trail’s route, established agreements with Native nations, and gave Council Grove its name and role in history. Understanding what the Sibley survey was, why it was done, how it was carried out, and what it left behind explains not only the town’s origin but also the benefits it continues to reap from this work.
