Mary Reynoso is the winner of the Council Grove Republican Pigskin Pick’em Football Contest for the second consecutive week. She correctly guessed 12 out of 17 games and won the tiebreaker round to be declared the winner. She will receive a $25 gift certificate to be used at any area sponsor of the contest.
The annual Parade of Lights returns on Friday at 7 p.m. Santa Claus will make his debut before heading to the Cottage House to greet children and families.
Esther Brabb was born on December 7, 1921, a day which would later live in infamy following the Pearl Harbor attack by Japan in 1941. Esther, however, says she’s never placed any special significance to the day beyond it being the day she was born. Esther will turn 100 in several weeks and, though she says she’s never developed a philosophy of life, her many years are a testament to hard work and dedication.
As families around the country prepare to gather with family, eat turkey and perhaps partake in some Black Friday shopping, they might be surprised to learn how much we don’t know about the origins of Thanksgiving.
