The Council Grove High School Lady Braves capped off a successful run in the Herington Preseason Invitational Basketball Tournament with a 43-31 victory over Rural Vista, clinching third place in the competition.
People tend to think of sipping ice cream floats in the middle of summer when temperatures are soaring. Ice cream floating in a bubbling base of cola or root beer can be a welcome treat on a hot day. However, floats can be just as delicious when the weather chills, particularly when ice cream enhances rich and decadent hot chocolate.
At Wednesday’s Council Grove Rotary Club meeting, Eric Meyer, the owner and publisher of the Marion County Record, gave his candid thoughts about the state of local journalism. Meyer, who gained international attention after a controversial police raid on his newspaper and his late mother’s home, offered sharp insights into the challenges facing small-town newspapers and democracy itself.

A new mural at 5 S. Broadway, in Herington, is complete. The mural by Mindy Allen of Mindy’s Murals in Junction city creates a beautiful representation of the Family Resource Exchange’s mission, that of going from a dark place to a better place. Allen said Corkie Dunlap first contacted her about three years ago about doing the mural but that actual painting was started last spring. The work was delayed by weather and Allen’s traveling. Allen has been painting murals for 12 years and is known for the mural at the Inman elevator she did last year. A photo of the building’s wall before the mural is in the inset to the right.
