The Council Grove Braves golf team continued their strong spring showing with a first-place finish at Tuesday’s varsity meet hosted by Herington Golf Club. This marks the second consecutive week the Braves have topped the leaderboard.
The Arbor Day Tree & Shrub Giveaway is April 25. You can pick them up at 116 Fox Street on Friday, April 25, from noon to 5 p.m. Types available are Chinkapin Oak, Bur Oak, Redbud, American Plum, Golden Currant, Fragrant Sumac, and Choke Cherry. There is a limit 10 per person.
Lori May, a first-grade teacher at Council Grove Elementary School, has been selected by her peers as USD 417’s Master Teacher nominee for 2025. Her nomination will be forwarded to Emporia State University for consideration in the Kansas Master Teacher program, with the statewide honorees to be recognized in May.
Despite local rumors, the federal Council Grove Lake is currently open for camping and recreation. Gary Kepley, Deputy Operations Project Manager for the Kansas Area, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, confirmed that all Class A parks at the lake — including Santa Fe, Canning Creek, and Richey Cove — opened on April 1. While the intent is to maintain operations through the end of October as in past years, Kepley noted that ongoing staffing shortages and a federal hiring freeze may affect the ability to sustain services later in the season.
