On December 19, 2024, Ashton Beames, age 22 of Herington, was eastbound on US 56 in her 2001 Ford Explorer at 6:13 p.m., when a deer entered the highway from the south ditch. Beames was unable to avoid striking the deer, causing frontend damage.
