“Shadows of the Shelf” promises spooks, surprises, and thrills

If you’re looking for a frightfully fun way to celebrate Halloween in Council Grove, mark your calendar for Shadows of the Shelf, a haunted walk-through that’s set to take over the upper floor, of the former Masonic Lodge, above The Dustie Shelf at 108 W. Main. The door creaks open at 6 p.m. on October 18, 25, and 31, offering three nights of chills and thrills you won’t want to miss.

The “Autumn Colors” mural has occupied a western wall of the Council Grove Post Office for 84 years.

A lasting tribute at the Council Grove Post Office

Visitors stepping into the Council Grove Post Office are greeted by a striking mural that captures the timeless beauty of rural Kansas. Entitled “Autumn Colors,” the artwork was painted in 1941 by Charles B. “The Kansan” Rogers, an accomplished artist, teacher, and printmaker whose career bridged both coasts but whose roots remained deeply anchored in Kansas.
