SWEEPSTAKES WINNER - Kansas Press Association President Jeff Cott presented Jan Sciacca of the Council Grove Republican with the Sweepstakes Award in Advertising at the Kansas Press Association conference in Lawrence last week. The Council Grove Republican was awarded the Sweepstakes Award in Advertising, which covered Divisions I, II and III. There are seven divisions of newspapers with the Kansas City Star being in Division 7 and the Council Grove Republican being in Division 3. The new and unannounced award was based on points received for the advertising awards the newspaper received. The Council Grove Republican received 12 other awards for accomplishments in 2023 in areas of writing, design and layout and advertising. They were reported in an article in April. Kansas Press Association represents more than 200 member newspapers throughout the state, including 10 dailies and approximately 190 weeklies.
Anthony Juarez With 68 Overpass will perform at the Neosho Riverwalk Amphitheater at 4 p.m. on Saturday, June 22.
Council Grove Republican reader Kelley Judd alerted us to a new fiction book that is based on life in Council Grove. The name of the book is Lila’s Journey, written by Jane Coletti Perry. It is available in paperback or on Kindle. The 287page book was published on May 19, 2024.
Phyllis Bettles is retiring from TCT after 21 years. I have talked to Phyllis via phone many times and always mistakenly thought she sat at a desk on W. Main Street in Council Grove. She cared for customers like she was present wherever you were. Since TCT is holding Bettles’ retirement celebration in Abilene on Friday, June 14, I imagine a lot of people from the many counties TCT serves feel the same way about Phyllis. She is an amazing employee who will be missed by many.
