The abolition of slavery in the United States marked the end of a long and winding road. President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation on January 1, 1863, a point in time when the American Civil War had already been raging for years. President Lincoln’s proclamation declared that “slaves within any State, or designated part of a State… in rebellion… shall be then, thenceforward, and forever free.” While this was an important step toward enslaved individuals receiving their freedom, the passage of the Thirteenth Amendment after the conclusion of the Civil War in 1865 officially abolished slavery.

MC Commissioners Create Public Works Dept, Consolidate 6 Departments

As other parts of the country are having trouble with their elected officials expanding government and spending more taxpayer dollars, our Morris County Commissioners have made a move to consolidate services, cross-train and streamline its workforce. The Morris County Commissioners created a Public Works Department, effective immediately, at their Tuesday weekly meeting. Under the umbrella of PWD they placed 6 departments, those being Roads, Bridges, Recycling, Noxious Weeds, Transfer Station and Emergency Management. Jeff Falter and Shelly Lautt are the co-directors of the new department.
