Kaw’s Sacred Stone Iⁿ ‘zhúje ‘waxóbe To Be Moved To Council Grove Aug. 30

James Pepper Henry, vice-chairman of the Kaw Nation, announced in Council Grove on Saturday that the Kaw’s Sacred Stone Iⁿ ‘zhúje ‘ waxóbe, will be moved from Lawrence to a temporary location in Council Grove before being placed at its permanent nearby resting place at Allegawaho Memorial Heritage Park by Washunga Days 2024. Pepper Henry, would not divulge the scheduled location of the temporary placement of the red sacred rock, which is reported to be a 25-28-ton Siouxan quartzite boulder, now located in Robinson Park in Lawrence. The boulder was pushed into what is now Kansas during the last ice age, between 600,000 and 1 million years ago, depositing it at the junction of Shunganunga Creek and the Kansas River, near present-day Tecumseh, Kansas where it held sacred space. The Kaw Tribe has many songs and prayers to the Creator about the stone.
