Council Grove: Born of Sibley’s Santa Fe Trail Survey

George Champlin Sibley’s name is not commonly heard in Council Grove today, yet his work in 1825 defined the community’s very existence. The Santa Fe Trail survey, led by Sibley, determined the trail’s route, established agreements with Native nations, and gave Council Grove its name and role in history. Understanding what the Sibley survey was, why it was done, how it was carried out, and what it left behind explains not only the town’s origin but also the benefits it continues to reap from this work.
