The Morris County Commissioner meeting was called to order on Tuesday, August 5, 2025, at 9 a.m. Commissioners Wayne Kohler, David Fox and Jim Barber were present. Bill Kassebaum, County Counselor, and Chelsey Schmidt, County Clerk, were present.
Chris Kennedy, Secretary of the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks (KDWP), visited Council Grove Wednesday morning to attend the major awards drawing of Phil Taunton’s youth fishing contest called the 2025 Summer Long, Family Fun Fishing Contest. Kennedy’s decision to make the trip was rooted in respect for Taunton’s decades of volunteer work encouraging young people to fish and enjoy the outdoors. “Out of all the constituents I’ve met traveling Kansas, there’s nobody more dedicated to youth and getting people out enjoying fishing,” Kennedy said.
In the heart of Council Grove, a unique cultural exchange is unfolding this summer, bridging the gap between two worlds through the Labo Clubs and 4-H international youth program. This year’s participants represent more than just a typical summer experience – they embody the power of cross-cultural understanding, language learning, and human connection.
A group of ladies with the United Women in Faith from the Council Grove/Dunlap United Methodist Church served lunch to the USD 417 staff Tuesday.
When volunteers come together at Pioneer Bluffs, great things happen. The air fills with laughter and conversation as coffee is poured and stories are swapped. Like an oldtime barn raising, the work goes fast as everyone works together.
