Russell L. Timm

Russell L. Timm, age 80, of Council Grove, Kansas went to be with his Lord and Savior on December 1, 2024 at Good Sheperd Hospice House in Manhattan.

Russell was born in Council Grove, in Sample Town, on May 25, 1944, to parents Gwen Ruth (Hammer) and John Oscar Timm. He was the youngest of 5 children.

As a first grader, Russell fought a prolonged bout of rheumatic fever. Growing up, many fun times were spent taking turns with his brothers and sisters riding an old bicycle around their property and playing games in the yard together. Hide and seek was a favorite.

Outdoors was where Russell liked to be. His family had a big garden, and he kept busy with landscaping projects. Fishing was a favorite activity, especially with his Uncle Bud!

At the time of his death, Russell was the oldest living member of Council Grove First Baptist Church. He served as a deacon, a trustee and sang in the choir. He was a member of the building committee where the congregation moved to its present location. He loved putting in long hours helping with the actual construction of the new church.

In May of 1999, after 33 years, Russell retired from the city of Council Grove Street Department and promptly entered into the biggest adventure of his life. On July 11, 1999, Russell married Wanda Wainwright in front of a capacity crowd including 33 members of his family.

Although he was only on a horse twice, Russell became an instant “horse husband” and 4-H parent. Russell enjoyed making new friends and having new experiences. He became famous among horseshow friends for his biscuits and sausage gravy.

Russell and Wanda led a very active life with family and friends until his multiple health issues slowed him down.

He was preceded in death by his parents, stepdaughter Diann Wainwright, brother Niles Timm, sisterin- law Kittie Timm and brothersin- law: Gene (Don) Wright, Joseph Cecconi, and Rob Kaspar.

Russell is survived by his wife Wanda; stepson Daniel (Lisa) Wainwright; stepdaughter Darci Wainwright; sisters Lyllas Cecconi and Janice (Larry) Long; brother Lowell Timm; sister-in-law Carol Kaspar; brother-in-law Kenneth (Michelle) Wilkerson; step granddaughter Mandy Jo Wainwright; step grandson Augustus Wainwright; and many nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., Thursday, April 24, 2025, at First Baptist Church, with inurnment following at Sunny Slope Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to First Baptist Church and may be sent to Sawyer Funeral Home, PO Box 273, Council Grove, KS 66846.
