Minnie Beck passed away on January 31, 2018, at the age of 99. Minnie was born on December 2, 1918, in Scotts Bluff, Nebraska, the third child of Eben and Dora Herman Johnson. Following Minnie’s birth the family moved to Kansas and resided on a farmstead near Lindsborg, Kansas. She attended a one-room grade school (District 60) and Falun High School where she graduated in 1936 as its valedictorian. On August 1, 1939, Minnie married C. W. Beck and they rented a farm north of Smolan, Kansas. On June 19, 1941, Minnie gave birth Ronald Dean Beck, the first of three children. When the farm of C. W.’s mother and his brother was seized by the federal government to establish an Army base, Camp Phillips, Minnie and C. W. moved with them to Morris County. Minnie and C. W. bought a farm near Parkerville, Kansas where they had a farming operation and raised registered Hereford cattle They sold breeding stock to buyers throughout the United States. Minnie gave birth to Herbert Harold Beck on April 23, 1943 and a daughter, Mary Kathryn Beck was born on April 4, 1947. The Beck children attended grade school in Parkerville and high school in Dwight, Kansas. All three children then attended college. Ronald graduated from Emporia State University and Herbert and Mary graduated from the University of Kansas. Minnie and C. W. attended Marion Hill Lutheran Church where they were both active members. Minnie was also a member of the Neighborhood Circle, the Home Demonstration Unit and the Minerva Club. C. W. passed way on February 21, 1970 but Minnie chose to remain on their farm. Minnie remained active in the management of the farm until 2008 when health issues caused her to live with her daughter and son-in-law, Chuck Briscoe, in Lawrence, Kansas. Minnie remained with Mary and Chuck until her passing. Minnie was preceded in death by her parents and her eight siblings: Howard Johnson, Grace Block, Bly Allen, Wanda Block, Lester Johnson, Evans Johnson, Alva Smith and Ruth Oborg. Minnie is survived by Ronald Dean Beck (daughter-in-law Janice, sons Jeffrey and Scott), Herbert Harold Beck (daughter-in-law Bobbi, son Andrew, and daughters, Margaret, Veronica and Miranda), and Mary Kathryn Beck Briscoe (son-in- law Chuck Briscoe). Services for Minnie will be held at Zeiner Funeral Home, 137 North Union Street, Council Grove, Kansas. Visitation will be from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on February 5,2018 and the funeral service will be at 10:00 a.m. on February 6, 2018. Minnie will be interred at Smolan Cemetery, Smolan, Kansas.
