Jean Ratliff Dies
Jean Deloris Ratliff, 94, Council Grove, passed away Monday, January 22, 2018, at Morris County Hospital. She was born February 17, 1923, in Dwight, the daughter of Walter and Celia (Goss) Gallaway. Jean married Elza Ratliff on February 16, 1941. Jean worked for the ration board during World War 11, while Elza was serving in the United States Army. During their lives together, they lived in Minnesota, California, Alabama, Oregon, Washington, Colorado, Tennessee and Kansas. She was known for her incredible cooking, which included homemade chicken and noodles, ice cream, bread, graham cracker dessert and cream pies. During the war, a neighbor from Italy taught Jean how to cook authentic Italian spaghetti sauce, which became a favorite with her family. Jean was a member of the First Baptist Church of Council Grove. She worked for many years with Arnold Gfeller & Company in Junction City and later was the accounts payable clerk for the Junction City School District. She was preceded in death by her parents and husband Elza on December 15, 2008. Jean is survived by her sons: Ron Ratliff of Manhattan and Terry Ratliff and wife Judy of Wamego; brother Doug Gallaway, of Oklahoma City; grandchildren, Nathan Ratliff, of Abilene and Jonathan Ratliff, of Clay Center; and great grandchildren, Brittany Metz, Briana Hopper, Barissa Ratliff, Brayden Ratliff and Elsa Louise Ratliff. Jean was cremated. A private family inurnment will be held at a later date at Dwight Cemetery.
