Elva Mae Barrett

Elva Mae (Barnhart) Barrett, 102 years of age, passed away July 4, 2024, at Diversicare of Council Grove. She was bom October 5, 1921 at Dunlap, Kansas, the daughter of Glen and Hazel (Worcester) Barnhart.

She graduated from Bushong Grade School in 1936 and Bushong High School in 1940. Elva married Wayne Barrett December 18, 1941, at Lyndon, KS. They lived in Junction City for a short time before relocating to Council Grove. They had a son Duane Barrett, born December 12, 1946.

Elva worked at Fairmont Creamery, J.C. Penney’s, Bretz Shoe Store, The Leader, Coffin Insurance, K.P.L. and Farmers and Drovers Bank.

She was a member of the Council Grove Christian Church and was actively involved in the women’s Fidelis group.

Elva enjoyed crocheting, playing cards, camping and helping with the church.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Wayne, and sister Alberta Critchfield.

Elva is survived by her son Duane Barrett, of Council Grove; grandsons: Jerry Barrett of CA, Glen Barrett, of Council Grove, Christopher Barrett, of CA, George Barrett (Melissa) of ND; granddaughters: Tabatha LeNoun (James) and Reianna Ressler (Joseph) all of CA; and 15 great-grandchildren.

A visitation for family and friends will be held at 9:30am, Thursday, July 11, 2024, at Council Grove Christian Church, with funeral services starting at 10:00. Burial will follow at Sunny Slope Cemetery.
