Dennis Hewitt

Dennis Hewitt

Dennis Hewitt, beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, friend and so much more, passed away peacefully on Tuesday September 8th, 2026, surrounded by his loved ones at the age of 73.

Born on March 4th, 1953 in Council Grove, KS to Carl and Wilma (Mayer) Hewitt. Dennis attended Alta Vista Elementary School and then graduated from Council Grove High School in 1971.

Dennis spent his life working for the Union Pacific Railroad from 1976 until retirement in 2013.

Throughout his life, he built a home with a family filled with love, laughter, and countless memories.

On March 18th, 1977 he married the love of his life, Roi Celeste Thompson. Together they shared 49 wonderful years of marriage. Their life together was filled with love, family, adventure, and laughter.

Dennis was truly one of a kind. He was known for his happy personality, infectious laugh and his unmistakable way of making people feel at home. He had a gift for finding humor in everyday moments, and many of the people who knew him will remember not only the things he said, but the way he could make an entire room laugh and would do anything to help a person in need.

He loved going out on the lake in his boat, playing board games, card games, and outdoor games. He also loved to argue with everyone just for the sake of arguing, but above all, he loved his family. His greatest joy was caring for his children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews and he treasured every moment spent with them. He leaves behind a lifetime of stories, inside jokes, traditions, and memories that will continue to bring smiles and laughter to those who knew and loved him.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Celeste; Children Matt Hewitt of Council Grove, Tami Hewitt of Abilene, Thomas Hewitt of Emporia, and Lindsey (Colby) Patnode of Council Grove; Grandchildren Hailey Hewitt (Gavin Spittles) of Council Grove, Tierney Hewitt of the home, Ellison and Walker Patnode of Council Grove; Siblings Pam Gordon of Alta Vista, Stanley (Deb) Hewitt of Alta Vista, Carla (Joe) Kormanik of Alta Vista, Mark (Lori) Hewitt of Topeka, and Russel (Sherry) Hewitt of Eureka; Mother-inlaw Shirley (Carol) Pape of Council Grove; Sisters-in-law Crystal (Jim) Fosdick of Fort Pierce, FL, Angelina (Roger) Zimmerman of Alta Vista, and Tiffani (Terry) Erichsen of Alta Vista, many nieces and nephews and friends who were fortunate enough to know him.

He is preceded in death by his parents Carl and Wilma Hewitt, son Brett Hewitt, father-in-law Bradley Thompson, and brother-in-law Bob Gordon.

The absence of Dennis will leave an enormous space in the lives of those who loved him, but his memory– and his sense of humor– will live on in the stories we tell, the laughter we share, and the countless lives he touched.

Dennis may no longer be with us, but he will never be forgotten. He was deeply loved, he will be deeply missed, and the world is a little quieter without him.

A celebration of life will be held on Friday September 18th at 10 AM at the Council Grove United Methodist Church in the Fellowship Hall.
