James Clyde (JC) Sarratt

James Clyde (JC) Sarratt passed away peacefully on May 22, 2024 after a short stay in hospice at the end of a long and full life.

He is preceded in death by his wife Patsy and son Gary, and is survived by his son Mark (Sandy), daughter Tammy, son Todd (Debbie) and sister Norma. JC was blessed with ten grandchildren and six great-grandchildren as his legacy.

The “Arky” or “Knothole” as he was known to his friends, grew up in Arkansas and Missouri before marrying his high school sweetheart and moving to Council Grove to start a family as a new business owner of Sarratt Stave Company. JC spent his life “in the timber” cutting logs that were then milled into staves. He shipped many loads of Kansas oak on boxcars to Kentucky which were then turned into whiskey barrels and made many close friends along the way with some well-known people in the distillery business.

One of the hazards of running a sawmill included losing his index finger which did not affect his golfing skills, as he was a force on the course well into his later years with a number of city titles to his name.

JC was an avid outdoorsman whether it be upland birds, waterfowl, small game or fishing and passed that respect for the outdoors onto his kids. Growing up in the Ozarks, he had a lot of knowledge to pass down and it’s survived now through three more generations.

After retiring, JC and Patsy moved to Wilsey where he continued to cut trees and drive farm trucks well into his eighties taking on the additional role as mayor of his community. For a man who did physical work his whole life, he stayed active almost to the end.

Many of his friends have passed, but anyone who knew him probably has a story or two to tell. He was a unique individual who left a mark.

The family intends a private service at a later date.
