UNDER WATER -- The community of Dunlap is no longer isolated by flood waters after Morris County Road and Bridge crews reopened Dunlap Road late Thursday morning. Heavy rains Tuesday night led to flooding in low-lying areas of the county, with some residents seeing more than three inches of rain in their gauges.
Shawn Wangerin is the Chief of Police and began his law enforcement career as a dispatcher for the Herington Police Department in 2001. He graduated from the Kansas Law Enforcement Training Center in 2002 and worked as an officer and Sergeant at HPD until 2005. Since May of 2005, Wangerin has been an officer with the Council Grove Police Department, being promoted to Senior Officer in 2008. He was promoted to Chief of Police in April of 2020 following the retirement of Chief John Stone.
Morris County commissioners voted to name Lisa Meyer as the new Morris County public health officer.
The Council Grove City Council approved a request on Tuesday from Superior Systems for a fuel price adjustment increase to garbage collection rates of 50 cents per month for each residential customer. John Scarce, President of Superior Systems, was in attendance at the meeting and said that the increase would mitigate the cost of diesel fuel, currently sitting at over $5 per gallon. Scarce said that he had tried to put off asking for a rate increase as long as possible, but had recently received a fuel bill for over $2,000 and felt he could not wait any longer to ask for an increase. The increase in collection fees will be removed once diesel prices drop to $4.50/gal. or below. The current average price for diesel fuel in Kansas is $5.24/gal. as of May 18.
The Council Grove High School Lady Braves Softball team is headed to state. The team were crowned 3A Regional Champions on Tuesday evening following their 11-3 defeat of Hillsboro and 6-1 defeat of Halstead. The team posted the best record in school history this season at 21-2. The evening saw Elle Dragone hit back to back homeruns and Karly Goodell and Paisli Butler each clobber one.
