50 YEARS -- Steve Dix, Wilsey, took part in the Florence Grand Prix motorcycle race on May 29, competing in the vintage 200cc class. Dix competed in the first Florence Grand Prix held in 1972 and won the 200cc race. The race was held annually from 1972-1978 and returned this year for its 50th anniversary.
HOOPTIE X -- Amy Honer (pictured) was the first place finisher in the 2WD category on Saturday in Council Grove›s first Hooptie X Kansas Rally, ending with a time of 1:01.90. First place finishers in other categories were: Benjamin Hanke, Topeka, Subaru Impreza Outback Sport, All-Wheel Drive; William Jones, Independence, MO, Buggie Custom, Hater Class; Zack Vincent, Long Island, RZR 100, Super Soft; and Darcy Unrau, Canton, Custom 212, Mini Bike.
On May,10, 11 and 12, 1954, Council Grove played host to the “Echoes of Yesterday” pageant, a dramatization of the area’s early history, trade with Native Americans, the founding of the town and much more. The dramatization was organized by the Council Grove Centennial Incorporated and produced and directed by Ken Wilson, with music directed by Ed Wortman, the choir directed by Sharon Hutchinson and organ accompaniment by O.E. Campbell.
The Council Grove High School Braves Track team competed on Friday and Saturday at the State Track and Field Meet at Wichita State University’s Cessna Stadium, with several Braves earning medals and others setting personal records.
