“On Kaw Butte” Brings Council Grove’s Past to Life Through Fictional Lens

When author Jim Knoch first rolled into Council Grove, Kansas, it wasn’t with the intention of writing a novel, and certainly not of embedding the town so deeply into one. His first visit nearly 40 years ago was an accident. Traveling the Midwest for his antique business and taking a detour from the usual I-70 route, Knoch happened into town just as the Washunga Days parade was ending. Caught at the tail end of what he described his “beat-up old Chevy van” with a few of his children in tow, he found himself as the first one in line to continue through town behind the parade.

Crowd attends CG Candidate Forum

The Council Grove Republican and Gieswein Insurance Agency hosted an election Candidate Forum Tuesday night at the historic Carnegie Building, drawing about 100 attendees from both the city and county. Candidates presented their priorities through opening statements and audience-submitted questions focused on local governance, taxes, infrastructure, housing, and downtown revitalization.
