Wrestling With The Future: Women's Wrestling Takes Off At CGHS
Eight years ago, McPherson athletic director Shane Backhus and wrestling coach Doug Kretzer began to formulate a campaign that finally saw fruition last April when the Kansas State High School Athletic Association (KSHSAA) approved the introduction of girls wrestling as the 23rd championship sport in Kansas.
The KSHSAA board of representatives approved the amendments to rules 44 and 23 of the KSHSAA Handbook by a 63-2 vote margin, with the biggest change coming to Rule 44, which replicates the language and structure of the boys wrestling state championship for girls.
