Polio scare shuts down Council Grove in 1943
In September 1943, Council Grove, Kansas, was gripped by fear as a local outbreak of poliomyelitis, commonly known as polio, prompted immediate public health measures. At the time, Kansas, like much of the nation, was experiencing a surge in polio cases, part of a larger epidemic wave that had been building since 1940. When children and adolescents contracted polio, the virus attacked their nervous system, leading to outcomes that ranged from mild, flu-like symptoms to paralysis, and in the most severe cases, death.
