Katy Depot - 1910
Present day - home of Council Grove CVB

M-K-T’s Council Grove Depot: then and now

The last surviving Katy depot, initially established as part of the Union Pacific Railway Southern Branch, basically remaining at its original location along the Neosho Subdivision of the young M-K-T Railway, is now re-purposed as the city’s Convention and Visitors Bureau in Council Grove, Kansas. Vacant for a few years, the building was purchased by the City of Council Grove as a treasured building listed on the National Historical Register. As of the first of August 2024, the CVB occupies the depot to continue their work with the community.

Preparing for Excellence

Preparing for Excellence

Preparing for Excellence As we move through the heart of summer, the dedicated staff and administration of USD 417 Morris County Schools have been working diligently behind the scenes to ensure our students and staff return to an exceptional learning environment. While our students enjoy their well-deserved summer break, our commitment to their education continues year-round. July Highlights: Building for Success This month has been marked by significant progress in preparing our facilities and programs for the upcoming academic year. Our maintenance and custodial teams have been conducting deep cleaning projects, facility improvements, and necessary repairs across all our buildings. Fresh coats of paint, updated classroom spaces, and HVAC work are just some of the improvements our students and staff will notice when they return.

The idea for the stained-glass creation came from a Norman Rockwell calendar. Then hobbiest Jim Couch created his own companionship piece.

Jim Couch brings art and heart back to CG

Jim Couch has returned to Council Grove, a place he’s long held close to his heart. After a career that started at Flint Hills Rural Electric Association and Kansas Power & Light (KP & L), followed by more than three decades with Wheatland Electric Cooperative in western Kansas, Couch has made his way back to Council Grove, nestled between his two sons’ homes in Manhattan and Wichita. His reason for returning is simple: he likes the town and the people. “I really liked it when I lived here before,” he said. “It just feels right being back.”
