The name “Council Grove” brings up many dates in people’s minds. Was it 1825, when the location was named? Was it 1854, when it became a trading post? Was it 1855, when it had a post office? Was it when the for-profit Council Grove Town Company declared it was a town—or some other date entirely?
Melissa Herring, Cottonwood Falls, receives P.E.O grant
Melissa Herring, an online student at Fort Hays State University, has been awarded a $3,000 P.E.O. Program for Continuing Education grant to help cover college expenses as she works toward her master’s degree in education. She was sponsored by Chapter BZ, P.E.O., in Cottonwood Falls.
Three couples celebrate 65 years of marriage together
Three couples with deep ties to Council Grove recently celebrated a rare milestone—65 years of marriage. Bill and Carole Downes (married June 12, 1960), Gary and Luella Auchard (married July 31, 1960), and Gordon and Deanna Smith (married December 27, 1959) were honored with a special lunch on Thursday, July 31, 2025, at Morris County Assisted Living. The date marked the actual 65th wedding anniversary for Gary and Luella.
Caitlen Honer selected for USSSA All-State showcase
Caitlen Honer of Council Grove has been selected to compete in the 2025 USSSA Missouri/Kansas All-State Showcase to be this weekend at Mid America West Sports Complex in Shawnee, Kansas. The honor is a recognition based on her work ethic, performance, attitude, and sportsmanship.
