Last week, Vicki Anderson handed me something I never expected to see again: a letter I had written 58 years ago to her father, Russell Shubert. I was a sixth grader in his class at Church of Christ Christian, now Council Grove Christian Church, and he had given us an assignment to explain why we liked his class.
On Monday, Gov. Laura Kelly and the Kansas City Chiefs today announced that an agreement has been reached to build a domed stadium and a mixed-use entertainment district, as well as a new team headquarters, training facility and mixed-use development in Kansas. The project will be a massive economic win for the state, with the construction phase alone creating over 20,000 jobs and $4.4 billion in economic impact for Kansas. From there, the stadium will bring over $1 billion in annual impact.
On Dec. 8, Kaitlin Johnson, 34, Council Grove, was southbound on Dunlap Road when she struck a deer with her 2019 Honda Odyssey. A 7-year-old child was with her, with both occupants wearing seatbelts. Neither occupant had injuries.
Bowl Bash 1 wrapped up with Ron Graham, of Council Grove, claiming the first-week title. Graham correctly selected 9 of the 13 bowl winners and secured the victory by winning the tiebreaker with a total points guess of 45. The correct tiebreaking score was 48, which was a total of the points in the Boise State and Washington game. Graham will receive a $25 gift certificate, redeemable at any of the contest sponsors.
Mike Hayes, of Council Grove, was the winner of Week 16 of the Council Grove Pigskin Pick ’Em football contest. Hayes correctly selected the winners of 13 out of 15 games to claim first place and earned a $25 gift certificate redeemable at any of the contest sponsors. Hayes Week 16 featured a mix of close finishes and decisive victories. The Seattle Seahawks edged the Los Angeles Rams 38-37 in overtime, while the Chicago Bears defeated the Green Bay Packers 22-16. The Philadelphia Eagles earned a 29-18 win over the Washington Commanders, and the New England Patriots pulled off a 28-24 victory against the Baltimore Ravens. The Carolina Panthers narrowly topped the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 23-20, and the Buffalo Bills claimed a 23-20 win over the Cleveland Browns.
