Ignoring K-177 detour leaves drivers stuck

Drivers traveling south of Council Grove are being urged to carefully follow posted detour signs after several motorists became stuck Tuesday while attempting to bypass the official route around the K-177 construction zone. The Kansas Department of Transportation closed a section of K-177 two days ago for reconstruction, with the closure expected to remain in place until approximately mid-September. Since the closure began, some drivers have ignored the official detour and attempted to find alternate routes on nearby minimum- maintenance roads. Reports began coming in Tuesday that several vehicles had become stuck in muddy conditions south of Council Grove.

Farmers & Drovers Bank circa early 1900s

100 years since the Fleagle gang’s Council Grove robbery

March 2, 2026, marked the centennial of the robbery of the Farmers & Drovers Bank by the Fleagle gang. Jake and Ralph Fleagle, of rural Garden City, together with other gang members robbed many banks in Kansas, California, and other states during the 1920s. On March 2, 1926, while one member of the gang waited in a running, blue, Buick touring car on Neosho Street aside the Farmers & Drovers Bank, two unmasked gang members entered the bank. (At that time the bank was located only in the building at the corner of the block.)
