Pam Huffaker Kvas captured this picture on April 2 in the early evening hours. “[The] pasture was burning south of the southwest side of the Council Grove City Lake,” she said. “The colors at sunset caught my eye, but the reflection on a rare evening with no wind made this one of my favorites. I am a novice photographer enjoying learning from local experts.”

CHASE COUNTY HAPPENINGS

FANCY NANCY DAY -- It was a great turnout for Fancy Nancy Reading Day and Birthday Party at Burnley Memorial Library in Cottonwood Falls on Saturday. The event brought 72 attendees out to enjoy all things fancy. The activities enjoyed included a Fancy Nancy story time read aloud by library director Janet Ayers, Fancy Nancy coloring pages, a collection of donated jewelry from which the girls could pick their favorite pieces to keep, a special jewelry bag, a tiara, fancy cupcakes, and a Fancy Nancy photo backdrop. There was also a large assortment of Fancy Nancy books which each girl could check out from the library. The assorted jewelry was donated by friends of the library far and wide. This is the second annual Fancy Nancy themed day sponsored by Burnley Memorial Library. The event was also fortunate to have five members volunteering from the Chase County 4-H Reading Project who assisted with the entire event. 4-H members assisting were Josepha Inlow, Alexys Miller, Juzzarra Slappy, Enley Lauer, and Ellena Bell. Last Saturday was a beautiful day for a trip to the backroads of Morris and Wabaunsee Counties, north of Highway 56, near the former town of Chalk. There was no worry about getting lost with road signs like this. (iPhone photo by Jan Sciacca)
