Old landmarks, lost newspaper accounts trace a changing Council Grove

The building marked with the arrow was built as the Gilkey House during 1856-1859. It was later known as the Commercial Hotel and the Somnus Hotel before it was torn down in 1939 to make room for the present U. S. Post Office in Council Grove.

Buildings, trees and even a troublesome piece of sidewalk once considered familiar landmarks in Council Grove gradually disappeared as the community changed.
